The City of Fort Lauderdale began conducting a comprehensive audit and survey of all active water meters across the city. This initiative, aimed at ensuring the accuracy and condition of water meters and service lines, will be carried out over the next 5 to 7 months.
To complete this important work, the City has partnered with RTS Water Solutions, a specialized contractor with expertise in water system management. Residents can expect to see RTS field technicians in their neighborhoods throughout the survey period. Each technician will be clearly identifiable by a logoed uniform, a visible employee badge, and an official RTS-marked vehicle for added security and transparency.
What the Water Meter Survey Involves
The audit process will consist of several key steps:
- Meter and Service Line Inspection: Technicians will inspect the water meter, meter lid, and the service line, noting any issues that may affect water flow or meter functionality.
- Digital Documentation: Using the City’s Work Order Management System, RTS will capture electronic records and photographs of the current condition of each water meter.
- Meter Box Cleaning: If debris is present inside the water meter box, it will be cleaned using a vacuum truck to ensure meters remain free of obstructions.
Preparing for Smart Water Meters
As part of Fort Lauderdale’s commitment to modernize infrastructure, the City will soon be installing smart water meters following the completion of this survey. Smart water meters use advanced technology to record water usage in real time, allowing for more accurate billing, quicker leak detection, and better water management.
The smart meters will empower residents to monitor their own water usage through an online portal, helping to manage consumption, reduce waste, and potentially save on water costs. These meters will also enable the City to promptly detect unusual patterns or potential leaks, helping residents avoid surprise high bills due to leaks or excess usage.
The City is excited to bring this technology to residents, creating a more efficient and sustainable water system for all. For questions or concerns about the Water Meter Survey or smart water meter installations, please contact our Customer Service Center at 954-828-8000.
