Many homeowners were frustrated after rising sea water from Hurricane Nicole and king tides caused widespread flooding on Las Olas last month, as well as affecting some streets in Seven Isles. Some of the Seven Isles residents reached out to the city commission, and others asked the homeowners association to file a complaint. However, there were only two commissioners to field complaints to, with three new commissioner seats still in question while the validity of the Fort Lauderdale election was being questioned and certified by the Broward Supervisor of Elections.
Last month, elections took place for Fort Lauderdale District 1, District 3, and District 4. The heated results of District 1 have been covered extensively in the news. District 4 was even more contentious, with 7 candidates vying for the sea vacated by former Vice Mayor Ben Sorensen, who made an unsuccessful bid for Florida Congress over the summer. Dr. Warren Sturman beat Kevin Cochrane by 49 votes for the commissioner position.

In all, the swearing-in ceremony for the City’s 2022 Commission had to be postponed, and is currently scheduled to occur on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at 9am at City Hall. After that date, it will be interesting to see how future decisions affecting our community are made. Meanwhile, District 2 Commissioner Steve Glassman remains Seven Isles’ area representative. Concerns about our flooding or other infrastructure problems can continue to be directed to Commissioner Glassman at: SGlassman@fortlauderdale.gov.
